“Dr. Horrible and Other Horrible Stories” by Zack Whedon, illustrated by various artists

(Grade 7 and up) If you don’t already know who Dr. Horrible is, don’t worry; soon enough, he will rule all ignorant fools like you. First though, he has to get one of his evil plans to succeed. If you enjoyed Joss Whedon’s hit musical, then you’ll love learning more about Captain Hammer, Penny, Moist, the Evil League of Evil, and Dr. Horrible himself in this hilarious collection.
This graphic novel stands out for me for a number of reasons. First and foremost, I love the source material—if you’ve never seen “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” then do yourself a favor and watch it now! (It’s not very long, go ahead, I’ll wait here. Are you back? Okay then.) The art and writing here are really excellent too, and of course, the characters that these stories focus on are wonderful. Dr. Horrible in particular is one of my all-time favorite villains, though that may be because he’s not very good at supervillainy most of the time. This is a fast read that leaves you craving still more horribleness. (4.5 out of 5 stars)
