“Johnny Boo and the Happy Apples” by James Kochalka

(Grade 1 and up) It’s a beautiful day, and Johnny Boo is showing off his muscles to Squiggle when something dreadful happens: his ice cream muscle gets all floopy! The Ice Cream Monster has great muscles though, and he tells Johnny Boo that he got them by eating Happy Apples. Johnny Boo and Squiggle set out to find some Happy Apples, but the apples that Johnny Boo finds on the ground are all mushy, and they make his muscles sad! Will Johnny Boo ever find the Happy Apples? And what will happen to the Ice Cream Monster’s head?
This, the third book in the Johnny Boo series, is just as adorable, clever, and hilarious as its two predecessors were. As always, Johnny Boo and Squiggle are a perfect pair, and the Ice Cream Monster once again serves as their erstwhile friend/foe. I’d highly recommend any and all of these books to young comics fans, but even as an adult, they’re still a ton of fun. And please note that this review is in no way biased by my love of ice cream or apples, happy or otherwise. (4.5 out of 5 stars)
