(Grade 2 and up) Pinky and Stinky are two cute little piglets who have been chosen to embark on the first space mission to Pluto. Unfortunately, they’re barely out of earth’s orbit when a mechanical mishap forces them to land on the moon, where most of the human astronauts aren’t very nice to them. Together, Pinky and Stinky will have to learn to pilot a giant robot, deal with the strange creatures that live in the caves beneath the surface of the moon, and fix their ship. Will Pinky and Stinky ever get to Pluto?
I really wish that I’d had James Kochalka comics to read as a kid; as it was, I ended up reading a lot of comics for adults, with the result that though I enjoyed them, a lot of the jokes and references went right over my head. (Pinky and Stinky, I think, are a bit more relatable to children than most of the characters from “Bloom County,” excluding Opus of course. :)) As astronauts, Pinky and Stinky fulfill every kid’s dream of bravely exploring space, meeting aliens, and saving the day in spite of one’s small stature. This was a funny, exciting, and even touching book about two very brave pigs, and it left me eager to read more stories by James Kochalka (which is what happens every time I finish one of his books).
